Arshile Gorky (1904–1948) was an Armenian-American painter who served as a crucial bridge between European Surrealism and American Abstract Expressionism. Born in the Armenian Highlands, he emigrated to the United States in 1920 and became a central figure in the New York art scene, developing a highly original visual vocabulary that synthesized influences from Picasso, Miró, and de Kooning.
