TimeOut

India Lawrence

"Through more than 700 costumes, props, handwritten notes, scripts, storyboards, behind-the-scenes photographs, and more, the exhibition travels through each of the director's 12 feature films in chronological order. Being able to get so close, it's incredible to see how each puppet, prop and set is meticulously handmade. This is an exhibition for the fans. And an excellent one at that."

Wes Anderson: The Archives at the Design Museum: 'Mind-boggling universe-building'

"The mind-boggling extent of his universe-building, and the control he exercises over it, is at the heart of this scrupulously curated, visual feast of more than 700 objects from the past three decades. For anyone who has ever fallen for his beautifully off-kilter world, it's a sheer delight. I defy the sceptics to not raise a smile, too."

Wes Anderson at the Design Museum review — even better than Kubrick

"The Texan is the third film-maker to be given a retrospective at the Design Museum, following Stanley Kubrick and Tim Burton, and this is the pick of the three. Cinema like this can feel incredibly extravagant — some canine puppets for Isle of Dogs took three years to make and were on screen for a matter of seconds. Here, though, you can spend time with it all."

Wesophiles will relish this deep dive into the detail-obsessed director

"Less committed cineastes might find the insistent "Wesness" of it all somewhat overwhelming, like being trapped in a branch of Oliver Bonas crammed with hyper-twee gewgaws. Yet for all the tantalising stuff on show, there's something fundamentally disconcerting about deconstructing the kinetic medium of film in order to reframe it as a collection of static objects. It's like pulling back the curtain to find the scenery creaking and the mystique, if not exactly dissolved, then certainly altered."

This Wes Anderson exhibition is even more delightful than his films

"Having the time to pause and pore over them is in some instances an even greater pleasure than watching the films themselves. You could wander into this show in a grumpy mood with the filmmaker, and come out wanting to write him an effusive fan letter – ideally in fancy calligraphy on ivory linen."
