Ana Mendieta

Cuban-American artist whose Silueta series, made in Mexico and Iowa in the 1970s and 80s, traced the outline of her body into earth, sand, and fire. Working across performance, photography, and land art, Mendieta explored displacement, spiritual connection to the land, and the violence done to women's bodies.
