Chuck Close

American · 1940–2021

Contemporary Art

Close built monumental portraits by subdividing a face into a grid and filling each cell with a single repeated mark, whether airbrush dot, fingerprint, or stamp. The technique produced paintings of extraordinary scale and intimacy while reclaiming figuration at a moment when abstraction dominated American art. A stroke in 1988 brought a second, looser body of work.
