Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter and printmaker whose work gave form to anxiety, desire and grief, and became a foundation for Expressionism. Illness and bereavement in childhood shaped paintings such as The Sick Child, and from the 1890s he developed The Frieze of Life, a linked series on love, jealousy and death that includes The Scream. He was also a prolific printmaker and an early adopter of photography and film as tools for self-examination.
