George Stubbs

British · 1724–1806

Romanticism

British painter and printmaker celebrated for horse paintings of extraordinary anatomical precision, grounded in years spent dissecting equine specimens to produce his Anatomy of the Horse. Stubbs elevated animal painting from a minor genre into a serious discipline, working for aristocratic patrons alongside scenes of rural labour and wildlife.

Rare life-size Stubbs horse portrait 'Scrub' shown with key studies.

"A display case of Stubbs’s anatomical drawings are ghostly and strange. Here are spectral stallions, every, nerve, tendon and sinew turned inside out. More of these, please, and less of the tidy parade-ground pictures on the opposite wall."
