Inventor of Pointillism, Seurat developed a systematic method of applying unmixed dots of pure colour to canvas, derived from scientific colour theory. His large compositions, including A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, combine rigorous formal structure with an unusual stillness that set him apart from his Impressionist contemporaries.
