Abstract Expressionism

American painter who invented the soak-stain technique, pouring thinned paint directly onto unprimed canvas to create luminous, transparent colour fields that felt grown from the surface itself. Her 1952 painting Mountains and Sea opened a direct path to Colour Field painting and shaped the work of Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis.
