Flemish painter widely credited with perfecting the technique of oil painting in the early 15th century, van Eyck achieved a luminosity and detail in portraits and altarpieces that remained unsurpassed for generations. The Ghent Altarpiece, completed in 1432, is considered the founding monument of the Northern European painting tradition.
