American artist who in the late 1950s began painting familiar symbols, flags, targets, numbers, and maps, with a precise and questioning attention that made them strange. Johns bridged Abstract Expressionism and the Pop Art that followed, introducing a conceptual rigour into painting that permanently changed what the medium could ask.
