J.M.W. Turner

British · 1775–1851

Romanticism

Turner pushed oil and watercolour to their expressive limits, dissolving landscape, sea, and sky into atmospheric passages of light and colour that left conventional representation far behind. His late works anticipated Impressionism by decades, and his range, from precise topographical views to near-abstract vortices of paint, has never been matched.

"JMW Turner is beaten by John Constable in this mighty show. But who cares when the work is so sublime you can hear the squelching and smell the river?"

— The Guardian
