British landscape painter who transformed the genre through close, direct observation of clouds, light, and vegetation, producing canvases of unprecedented meteorological sensitivity. The Hay Wain and Dedham Vale elevated English countryside painting to the level of European history painting, influencing the Barbizon School and the development of French Impressionism.
