Russian-French painter whose luminous, dreamlike compositions draw on Jewish folk tradition, Russian peasant life, and Parisian modernism to create images of floating figures, animals, and lovers hovering above the world. Chagall was also a major stained-glass artist, producing windows for cathedrals and synagogues across Europe and the United States.
