Contemporary Art

Portuguese-British artist celebrated for narrative paintings and drawings rooted in folklore, fairy tales, and political history. Rego's work explores power, desire, and the female experience with psychological intensity sharpened by dark humour. Her 1998 abortion series, produced in response to Portugal's referendum on legalisation, remains among the most politically urgent art made in Britain.
