American painter who abandoned a celebrated career in Abstract Expressionism in 1970 to return to raw, cartoon-like figuration with hooded figures, discarded shoes, clocks, and bare light bulbs. Initially reviled by critics, this late work is now recognised as among the most honest and prophetic painting of the 20th century.
