Cuban artist of Chinese, African, and European heritage who fused Afro-Caribbean spiritual traditions with the vocabulary of European Surrealism and Cubism into a singular pictorial language. His 1943 painting The Jungle is one of the defining works of postcolonial modernism, confronting the plantation history of the Caribbean with mythic force.
