William Kentridge

South African · b. 1955

Contemporary Art

South African artist whose practice encompasses drawing, film, theatre, and opera, all rooted in the colonial and apartheid history of South Africa. Kentridge's films are made by repeatedly drawing, erasing, and redrawing charcoal images so that traces of earlier marks remain visible, linking personal memory with political history through a process of visible erasure.
