Form follows function, taught

A German school rather than a style, though it produced one of the most recognisable styles of the century. Gropius put painters such as Klee and Kandinsky in the same building as weavers, metalworkers and typographers, on the principle that there was no hierarchy between art and craft. Everything was stripped to geometry and function. The Nazis closed it in 1933, scattering its teachers to Chicago, London and Tel Aviv, which is precisely how its ideas went global.
