The most commercially successful British artist of his generation and a central figure of the YBAs, Hirst made his reputation with animals preserved in formaldehyde tanks, including The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living. His spot paintings and medicine cabinets established a formal vocabulary built around mortality and science.

A 20-metre pregnant bronze figure holds a sword aloft while balancing on a pile of legal books, her torso flayed to expose the foetus within. An allegory for truth and justice on long-term loan to North Devon Council.
