Damien Hirst
British · b. 1965
Contemporary Art
The most commercially successful British artist of his generation and a central figure of the YBAs, Hirst made his reputation with animals preserved in formaldehyde tanks, including The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living. His spot paintings and medicine cabinets established a formal vocabulary built around mortality and science.
