French-American sculptor whose practice spanned nearly seven decades, drawing on childhood trauma, the body, and sexuality with extraordinary psychological directness. Known above all for her towering spider sculptures titled Maman, Bourgeois also made the Cells, enclosed room-like installations exploring memory and fear, becoming one of the most significant artists of the 20th century.
