Robert Mapplethorpe

American · 1946–1989

Contemporary Art

American photographer who applied the formal precision and compositional rigour of classical sculpture to photographs of male nudes, flower still lifes, and celebrity portraiture. His frank imagery of gay sexuality and Black male subjects generated significant controversy, including a landmark obscenity trial, while securing his place in the history of American photography.
