William Eggleston (born 1939, Memphis) is an American photographer widely credited with establishing colour photography as a legitimate fine art medium. His "democratic" approach to image-making — treating suburban streets, domestic interiors and everyday objects with equal visual importance — was groundbreaking when MoMA presented his first major exhibition in 1976.
