Hayward Gallery

Southbank Centre, London 🇬🇧

A Brutalist landmark on London's South Bank, the Hayward Gallery has been one of the UK's most important contemporary art venues since opening in 1968. Known for ambitious, large-scale exhibitions by major international artists, its raw concrete spaces are well suited to immersive and installation-based work. Operated by the Southbank Centre, it sits alongside the Royal Festival Hall and the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Chiharu Shiota: Threads of Life

Until May 3

Shiota's signature red-thread installations fill the Hayward Gallery's top floor

"The visual impact is arresting but superficial. Threads of Life could be an eerie set for a movie or a music video; a selfie before it would look great. The work's message is too literal and sappy."

Yin Xiuzhen: Heart to Heart

Until May 31

First major UK survey of Yin Xiuzhen's sculptures using clothing, concrete and found objects

"There's no criticism, no depth, no point to its use in these works. Here's some old T-shirts turned into Big Ben. Ta-dah. You have to create your own meaning here, because the artist can't really be bothered."
